Restaurants & Bars: Pizza Factory at Hyde Park corner
An industrial-warm restaurant interior built around an open, theatrical wood-fired kitchen.
Pizza Factory is a family restaurant serves original Italian pizza, baked in the only original wood fired oven in Sri Lanka. The venue of the restaurant is a high density area of high-rise buildings with offices, shopping complexes and other mix-used functions along with large number of major roads. The restaurant is located in the 2nd floor of an old building in a conspicuous area under the shade of a beautiful ‘Roberosiya ‘ tree facing Union place and Hyde park corner, the most vibrant and urbanized streets in Colombo. One of the main conceptual goals of the restaurant was the sensational separation from the monotonous conventional space and creating vibrant places where customers forget about the surrounding hustle and bustle of the city. The restaurant divided in to four main spaces with different expressions with a triangular entrance, a fine dining area, one private room and an open live kitchen. A combination of low cost and local common materials is used as the material palette and wood is used as the base material. Different forms of wood have experimented along with steel. Handmade steel framed wooden panels were repeatedly used to combine all three spaces except the private room as the architects wanted to give a different sensation to that area. Pizza factory is an attractive place with a sense of comfort and spatial excitement from the conventional commercial spaces in Colombo.
